Music across the Centuries

From ancient to contemporary music, the heritage repertoire is reimagined through fresh interpretations, with selected works performed on historical period instruments.

La Voz de Barrios - Pietro Locatto

From the album Locatto, P. (2025). La voz de Barrios. Evidence Classics.

“La voz de Barrios” aims to highlight one of the instruments that Barrios loved and played most: the guitar by the great luthier Francisco Simplicio from 1927 that belonged to Martin Borda y Pagola, Barrios’ friend and protector for over 15 years who often lent his instrument to the Paraguayan virtuoso.

Pietro wishes to thank Adopt a Musician for making this project possible.

Filmed at Palazzo da Schio, Ca’ d’Oro, Vicenza (Italy).

The building we see today in the heart of Vicenza’s historic center rests on much older structures, in all probability from the Roman era. The original core, with its elegant Venetian Gothic facade, dates back to the 14th century and corresponds to the section facing between Corso Palladio and Contrà San Gaetano. The construction was commissioned by the ancient and noble da Caldogno family, military advisors to Emperor Frederick I and counts palatine. The Palace was later purchased by Matteo dal Toso, and then became the residence of a wealthy family of silk merchants, the Franceschinis. It was Dorotea Franceschini who, in 1677, brought it with her as a dowry when she married Nicola di Giulio da Schio. The da Schio family, who have been its custodians and residents ever since, expanded the building and had the monumental staircase built in 1772. Following World War II, Berardo da Schio (1904-1989) poured all his efforts into restoring the severe damage caused by bombings. The ground floor houses the “Giovanni da Schio (1798-1868)” private collection of archaeological and epigraphic artifacts: wine and oil amphorae, fragments of temples, milestones, and civil and tomb headstones that tell the millennia-old history of the Berician city. Standing tough and vigorous more than 15 meters from the ground, a century-old wisteria dominates the inner courtyard. The Palace, where the da Schio family still lives, is now home to professional and artisanal activities, as well as the historic aging cellar for home-produced wines. From time to time, the Ca’ d’Oro transforms into an atmospheric stage for shows, cultural events, and music concerts.

Enrique Granados - Azulejos Guitar Duo

From the album Granados, E. (2024). 12 Danzas españolas / Capricho español (Arr. for 2 guitars), Azulejos Guitar Duo (Eugenio Della Chiara & Pietro Locatto). Naxos.

The Azulejos Guitar Duo’s new transcription of Enrique Granados’s Danzas españolas, originally written for piano solo, was inspired by the guitar duo arrangements that Miquel Llobet made of two of the Danzas in 1924. They built on this example, incorporating the widened expressive range offered by re-scoring for two guitars, creating a superb new representation of this much-loved classic of the Spanish repertoire.

Eugenio Della Chiara has performed across Europe and in Japan, and has appeared as a soloist with the Palermo Orchestra Sinfonica del Teatro Massimo, the Filarmonica Marchigiana and the Orchestra Senzaspine. Having first recorded three albums for Decca, in 2024 he released his first album on the Naxos label, which featured the guitar works of Gaspar Cassadó and Frederic Mompou. Della Chiara has been artistic director of the chamber music series MUN – Music Notes in Pesaro since 2005. In 2024 he was appointed full professor of guitar at the Conservatorio di Musica Lucio Campiani in Mantua.

Pietro Locatto is a prizewinner of several international competitions, including First Prize at the Gianni Bergamo Classic Music Award in Lugano. Awarded the ‘young promise’ Golden Guitar at the Convegno Internazionale di Chitarra in Milan, he has collaborated with the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini in Parma and the Orchestra Sinfonica d’Este in Ferrara, and has performed in festivals across Italy, Europe, Australia and Mexico. Together with cellist Martina Biondi, he founded Duo Evocaciones, which is dedicated to expanding the repertoire for guitar and cello.

As a soloist, he has collaborated with the Arturo Toscanini Philharmonic Orchestra and the Este Symphony Orchestra, performing at prominent international festivals across Europe, Australia, the USA, and Mexico. His acclaimed discography with Stradivarius, Naxos, and Evidence spans from 20th-century Spanish repertoire to Bach transcriptions. Dedicated to chamber music, he co-founded Duo Evocaciones with cellist Martina Biondi to innovate the cello-guitar repertoire. Since 2019, he has served as the collaborating guitarist for the Teatro Regio in Turin. Deeply active in music education, he is currently a professor at the Conservatory of Trapani and regularly conducts masterclasses throughout Italy.
